In what circumstances may breastfeeding not be suitable for the baby?

• Serious metabolic disorders ie galactosaemia.
• Cleft lip or palate malformations. This does not mean that you cannot breastfeed, but it will be more challenging and expert advice should be sought. Cup feeding or using specially adapted spoons and teats have been found to be helpful in order to feed the baby expressed breast millk. Once surgery has been carried out to repair the problem, then breastfeeding can start properly and will actually aid the development of the mouth and jaw.
