New bump, new-look me, clearly a new hair cut was required. I optimistically sat down in a very cool Shoreditch salon and let the Greek God of Locks do his thing. Evidently when I heard myself say 'please do not cut me a fringe' he heard 'please, please, please cut me a fringe otherwise I will leave here most upset as I think 'bangs' will perfectly balance my bump'. I closed my eyes and felt the cold scissors on the bridge of my nose and by the time I peeked through the chunk of hair combed over my face it was too late. Sigh. I got back on the tube and blended in perfectly with a sea of similarly fringe framed faces. Clearly Shoreditch salons operate a one look suits all approach to hairdressing. I stepped off at Bond Street and gazed enviably at all the women with bouncy glossy Cheryl Cole manes. Moral of the story? Don't go to Shoreditch for a hair cut if you are more at home in Selfridges. Which is where I went to invest in six months worth of grips and slides. At least hair grows quicker when you are pregnant, It was with a cunningly concealed fringe that I set off for the Mamas and Papas press day to admire the new collection - all of which I knew would look better on a pre-fringe version of me. Grump grump. I was greeted by the very beautiful Nicky Hambleton-Jones who was showcasing her collaboration with the high street chain. I wanted to explain that my self-imposed Mum to be make-over would have surely had a better outcome if I had been able to borrow her for much needed style advice beforehand. I bit my lip in the hope that by avoiding aforementioned remarks I would reduce the likelihood of being remembered as 'the girl with the frightful fringe'. I admire coatigans, a glamazon collection and maternity bras that don't look like they have escaped from a war museum or the local building site (honestly - how much scaffolding does a pregnant cleavage need?!). Super impressed to hear that the beautiful bras are made from bamboo - which has healing properties. Rather clever concept. Nicky and I compared bumps and congratulated ourselves on still having wrists and ankles - albeit briefly and at the beginning of the day. Water retention inevitably leads to 'cankles' by lunch time. A disconcerting occurrence whereby ankles become puffy and blend seamlessly into calfs. We also admitted to actively avoiding antenatal classes. We were both deterred by the assumption that there would be a bizarre pressure to forge life long bonds with women we had nothing in common with - aside from the fact that we all need to learn how to breathe and conquer fears relating to the rather obvious design flaws surrounding giving birth. Maybe we should explore the possibility of starting an Anti-Natal class? Katy Hymas November 2009 At 28 Katy is reluctant to hang up her party shoes for good just yet but admits that, at 5 months pregnant with twins, they may not get much wear over the coming months. Having set up a PR company last year Motherhood was not exactly written into the business plan but the babies are a welcome surprise and someday, somehow, Katy hope she can have it all; shiny shoes and a business suit, party shoes and nights out... and of course two healthy, happy bundles of joy.
