| Early ultrasound of sextuplet pregnancy |
The parents of Ireland's first sextuplets have decided on the names of their four girls and two boys. Nuala Conway, who is in her twenties, gave birth to her babies 14 weeks prematurely at the Royal Maternity Hospital Belfast. The six babies will be called Ursula, Austin, Shannon, Karla, Eoghan and Kerrie.
The babies, with weights ranging from 1lb 7oz to 2lb 2oz at birth, will be in intensive care for some time yet. Their Caesarean section delivery involved 30 medical staff but took just five minutes.
The six babies were not conceived through IVF and doctors say that the sextuplets, who are the first in the UK since 1993, are "doing well".
Nuala and Austin Conway had kept their sextuplet pregnancy a secret from most people in their village although their priest,Father Pat Hughes, was one of the few who had been told. He said the community had prayed for the young family at mass on Sunday.
"We prayed today to thank God for the safe delivery of the sextuplets and we prayed that they would thrive and grow," he said.
