If you have suffered from a mental illness or any form of depression in the past you should let your GP know, as there is a slightly higher risk that you will be affected by postnatal depression.

It is important that your doctor is aware of the history of your mental health so that they can assess the risks of PND after childbirth.

The following measures should be taken to keep your chance of developing PND as low as possible:

BulletTry to stay relaxed and get as much rest as possible
BulletGet gentle exercise every day
BulletFollow a healthy, balanced diet
BulletEat regular meals and don't have long periods without food
BulletDon't drink too much alcohol
BulletTake multi-vitamin supplements each day
BulletDon't try and do too much at once. Set yourself realistic goals and take breaks
BulletTalk to someone about any worries you have
BulletStay positive and remember most people who suffer from PND make a full recovery.
