The samples obtained from amniocentesis are extremely useful for assessing the health of the baby as it grows in the womb. Amniocentesis allows cells from the foetus to be analysed so any problems it has can be diagnosed while it is still in the womb.
With the help of amniocentesis, doctors are able to determine the likelihood of the baby developing certain conditions. These conditions might be inherited from a parent, or they may develop during the pregnancy.
