Women and their Hormones

Women and their Hormones
It would seem that women are more savvy about slimming than contraceptive hormones.

Only 34% of women understand the impact of hormones present in the contraceptive pill!

British women know more about the physical effects of ready meals than the physical effects of hormones in the contraceptive pill. 96% of the 1,000 UK women surveyed say they know how a high fat diet affects their body. Yet only a meagre 34% know the impact of hormones in the pill they take every day.

Research conducted by Bayer Schering Pharma shows that women are more interested in food intake than hormone intake. 80% of women say they think regularly about the fat and calories in their food. Only 44% gave any thought to the hormones in their contraceptive pill.

Although there is a knowledge gap when it comes to contraception only 42% of women are actively trying to find out more about the contraception they are putting into their bodies. 68% manage to keep up to date with new nutritional information.

The contraceptive pill is the most common form of contraceptive favoured by approximately 3.5 million women in the UK. Although it is encouraging that women are dedicated to healthy eating, they shouldn't ignore other substances that they put through their bodies as a matter of course.

Dr Catherine Hood, sexual health expert, comments, "While it's positive that young women are so knowledgeable about their diet, it's worrying that they're not so knowledgeable about their daily contraception. While different nutrients have different health benefits, different hormone levels in different Pills can have varying effects on your body too. Just because a certain Pill works for your best friend, it doesn't mean that it will suit you. Because Pills are made up of different types and amounts of hormones, you may find that one Pill gives you unwanted side effects, whilst another may give you additional non-contraceptive benefits. Everyone is different so I would urge young women to discuss which Pill is best for them with their healthcare professional before making a decision."
