LilyPadz Breast Pads were introduced to UK Mummies by Rachel Stephens who found them whilst living in the States as an expat. Rachel, a breastfeeding mum of two (Imogen 6 Archie 3), thought there had to be an alternative to the regular disposable breast pads which impose such terrible fashion restrictions on you. Well - there is and they’re called LilyPadz!
Where it began…
As a woman I loved clothes, buying them wearing them….. What women doesn’t? When pregnant with my first child Imogen, now 6, there were lots of cool maternity clothes available, so mums could look stylish with baby to be!
I knew the benefits of breast-feeding and definitely wanted to give it a try. When Imogen, my daughter was born I instantly took to feeding and she was a natural. We enjoyed, we bonded
and it helped me drop my pregnancy pounds and get back into my regular clothes FAST. No fancy diets ladies - HONEST!
The Gripes…
I was eager to pull out my fashion favourites which had been locked away in the vault for 9 months! I then quickly realised that nursing had its own dress code and restrictions. Easy access bras - white not a good colour in case you leak - dark colors better as they make drips less noticeable - Shall I go on…?
I had lots of milk. So much - probably enough for two! I knew about the leaking from the classes and the books so I was expecting it. All part of the duty of being a mummy-milka I thought!
At first I mopped up my spills with disposable breast pads, but I have to say, I found the paper uncomfortable against my skin. Not only that, the pads moved and shifted, and not to mention the big rings!!
I then tried re-useable cotton and wool pads. These were undoubtedly an improvement and were more comfortable to wear. However, I still had the annoying leaks that would often seep through my pads onto my top and I could no longer wear more snug-fitting tops or WHITE as the pad lines were too visible, saying ‘hello’ to all and sundry.
Then one day planning to go to my friend’s wedding and looking for what to wear or, more aptly, what not what to wear as I wasn’t faced with many options, I was distraught. It was a scorching hot day in Washington DC and all I could think was - must wear a bra; dark colour only, no sheer fabrics; no strapless…..
My Fashion Saviour Arrived!
I went round all the shops looking for a less than ‘visible bra’ and in one magical store, a perky assistant showed me LilyPadz. She said; ‘Try these you can forget your bra!’ They looked like giant contact lenses! Willing to try anything I bought them. Needless to say I LOVED them and that was the end of all my clothes restrictions!
And that’s where Lilypadzonline all started…
