As a mum expecting twins, all sorts of people gave me well-meaning advice. Before the babies were even born, I was told what I should buy, what I just HAD to have, how to do this and how to do that. Once I'd given birth and was really thrown in the deep end, I soon found out through trial and error what I really needed. My list is by no means definitive and other mums of multiples may have other things to add.
My Essentials
2 kettles - 1 kettle isn't big enough to make enough bottles and leave enough water left over for the much-needed coffee
2 sterilisers - 2 babies feeding every 2 hours = 24 bottles
2 baby bouncers - to be able to strap them down safely and go to the loo is a god-send!
Docking stations for the car seats - saved us so much time putting the car seats in and out the car
Pampers bed mats for under their heads - save changing the sheets 2/3 times a night when sick
Dimmer switch in the bedroom so babies were never woken fully by the light
Travel cot - great for downstairs when little for them both to go in for their naps and when they grow a great place to pop them while you do quick jobs e.g put the tea on, answer the door
2 bath seats - this meant I could bath them both on my own
Online shopping
Unessential Items
2 Moses baskets - babies are not in them for long enough to warrant the cost and they can both share a cot in the early days as they are so little anyway. Mine shared till they were 4months! (NB: see comment from thebabywebsite below)
2 of all toys - they will have to learn to share sooner or later
Baby bath - I used the washing up bowl and then moved to the bigger bath when they out-grew this
top and tail tub - I used 2 different colour plastic cups
Bottler Warmer - never heated up fast enough. A jug of hot water was much more effective
My Tips For Mums of Multiples
As tired as you are, try and get everything you need for the next day brought downstairs before you go to bed. The last thing you want to do is spend half of what little time you have, running up and down the stairs. I had a small basket which I would re-stock every day with 4 vests, 4 sleepsuits, baby wipes, nappies and a change of clothes for myself.
Take ANY help that is offered.
Keep a bag packed by the door so you have less thing to try and sort out if you decide to go out.
Babies dont get dirty. They don't need to be bathed everynight - a wipe around hands and faces is perfectly fine
Ask for help whenever you need it. Having more than 1 baby is hard work.

TheBabyWebsite stresses that these are Charlotte's comments and opinions and not ours. Please be aware that if your babies share a cot/moses basket etc then you MUST always ensure both that they do not overheat and that they have sufficient space to breathe fresh air. If one is breathing the other one's Co2 (breathed out air) then this is very dangerous. This can easily happen particularly in a still room with little air movement.
