 M&S are to start charging 5p for carrier bags Marks and Spencer food customers will soon have to pay for their carrier bags. Customers will have to pay 5p for plastic bags, with the money raised going to an environmental charity. Campaigners say plastic bags damage the environment. Some 13bn are given free to UK shoppers every year, and they take an estimated 1,000 years to decay. All food customers at Marks and Spencer will get free long-lasting bags from early April for one month. The 5p charge will then begin on 6 May.

While most European countries struggle to boost their populations, The USA is enjoying a baby boom. A rise in births means that the States has now reached the tipping point of 2.1 babies per woman - which statisticians say is needed to replenish a population. There are a number of factors believed to be behind the rise in births, which although it's linked to the Hispanic community, straddles all parts of the American population. More limited access to abortion, poverty and reduced contraceptive use is being touted as reasons behind the rise, as is the fact that American men are more likely to share childcare duties.
