How Can I Tell When I'm Ovulating?

Ovulation is when an egg is released from a woman's ovaries.

For most women, the menstrual cycle lasts about 28 days. Ovulation (when the ovaries release an egg) usually happens between 10-16 days before the start of your next period.

You're at your most fertile when you're ovulating, so if you're trying to conceive (get pregnant), it's the best time of the month to have sex. However, it's possible to conceive at any time of the month, even during your period, as sperm can survive inside a woman's body for several days.

There are a number of physical signs that you may experience that will help you to know when you're ovulating. The most obvious, and reliable, is an increase in vaginal discharge, which is usually clear and more watery than normal. You may also notice that you have breast tenderness, bloating, mild abdominal pain, a slightly increased body temperature, and an increased sex drive.

You can buy ovulation prediction kits over-the-counter (OTC), which test the hormone levels in your urine, to find out when you're at your most fertile.
