30 years ago women started burning their bras and the sexual revolution was born. However a new Cambridge University survey shows that women are still being paid less than their male counterparts and are working in jobs of lower status than men. The reason behind it seems to be because women take on the majority of the domestic and childcare duties. Consequently, women are less likely to be able to work in better paid jobs where longer and more antisocial hours are the norm.
The study, which looked at 30,000 men and women across Europe found that women work on average 68 hours a week doing both paid-for and unpaid domestic duties. By contrast men in full-time employment usually work an average of 55 hours a week. The good thing is though that women who work part-time are happier and often feel they have a better work-life balance than men.
