Rise in UK Maternal Deaths
Medical advances and improvements in care should mean that in theory, giving birth today in the UK is a less risky affair than it was even a year ago.

But a new survey shows that in spite of our modern society, the number of women dying in childbirth is on the rise in the UK.

A report due out next week from the Confidential Enquiry into Maternal and Child Health, suggest that figures on maternal deaths between 2003-2005 are greater than from the period 2000-2001.

A number of factors have been suggested for the rise, including an increase in general obesity levels of the women giving birth, to a rise in the numbers of immigrant mothers who fail to turn up for their antenatal appointments.

Another reason for the rise being suggested is the increase in women requesting 'natural' births.
