NUK has teamed up with Clare Byam-Cook to provide the best advice and support on breast-feeding for Mums. Clare is a trained nurse and midwife and specialises in helping mothers with breast-feeding problems. She’s a favourite with celebrities including Kate Winslet, Kate Beckingsale and Trinny and Susannah. Clare’s tips are also available in a book What To Expect When You're BreastFeeding and a DVD BreastFeeding Without Tears which you could win in the NUK Competition.
So what are Clare’s top 5 tips for Mums when feeding?
When starting to express it’s important to find a breast pump that works for you. Generally the easier your milk flows the simpler the pump you need.
Any milk which you express can be frozen and kept in the freezer for up to 3 months. Defrost at room temperature or stand the milk in a jug of hot water and use immediately.
Most babies take a fairly similar amount at each feed, but if they are particularly hungry, it’s always good to keep some spare expressed milk in reserve.
When breast-feeding you need to take in plenty of fluids so make sure you have a glass of water by you during feeding.
For more relaxed night time breast-feeding, try lying on your side tummy to tummy with your baby.
NUK has also developed an independent guide to feeding your baby in partnership with the Royal College of Midwives. For your free download guide of ‘Babies, Bottles and Burps’ visit www.nukbaby.co.ukor call the NUK Careline on 0845 300 2467.
