JOJO MAMAN BÉBÉ PLEDGES TO BUILD A SCHOOL FOR 400 IN RURAL MOZAMBIQUE

JoJo Maman Bébé announce the launch of their new designated charity; Nema which roughly translates as ‘happiness following hardship’. The
Schools for Mozambique
company ethos has always been to support a charity where 100% of contributions go directly to the beneficiaries and to ensure that the help provided makes a real difference to the lives of less fortunate children in the developing world.

Nema, the brainchild of Amy Carter, a pioneer in environmental and ethical tourism, was established to help rural communities in Northern Mozambique and to protect the environment they rely so heavily upon. The focuses of the charity are upon education, heath, enterprise development and environmental management and research.

Laura Tenison MBE, Founder and Managing Director of JoJo Maman Bébé, first became aware of the acute poverty affecting rural Mozambique when on holiday with her two children last year. Her young boys, Toby and Ben, made friends with local village children whilst playing barefoot football on the beach and the family were enchanted by the warm hearted welcome they received. The local school, outside which the football fames were played, was little more than a bullet marked shack, supposedly providing educational facilities to some 300 children, with one teacher offering two hour class shifts. It was obvious that the village would benefit from a new school building and Laura’s eldest son suggested the project was considered.

Since JoJo Maman Bébé started the association with the Nema last month, the company has:

• Pledged to build a new school of a size to educate 400 children with classrooms, hall and teachers’ accommodation.
• Purchased and had distributed 300 mosquito nets to give to every
pregnant woman and child under 2 years old in the community.
• Designed and launched a website for Nema: www.nemafoundation.org.
• Pledged to undertake the charity’s accounts and man a telephone line in the company customer service centre.

Once the school has been built Nema will ensure a lunchtime feeding program is introduced, ensuring all children are given a healthy and nutritious lunchtime meal – in some cases representing the only good meal of the day.

“Our association with Nema and the building of the new school in Guludo Village will offer our employees and customers the chance to really get involved in the company charity. Not only will we be

making donations on a corporate level, we have also pledged to donate 5% of every gift voucher we sell and we will be encouraging our employees to come up with new ideas for fund raising events.”
says Laura Tenison.

”Nema is a fantastic charity with great potential to change lives and we are going to be working hard to raise awareness and help Nema achieve their goals.”

Laura Tenison will be returning to Northern Mozambique with her children in the near future, to see the start of the new Guludo school building project. Details of this trip and the progress made in the project and the charity will be recorded on the JoJo website.

Nema is a UK Registered Charity, Number 1113131.
