There are some very worrying statistics in Ofsted's new report on childcare. Childcare places in England judged to be good or outstanding have dropped recently, according to Ofsted. 57% of 27,200 settings inspected in 2006-07 were classed in these categories, which meant an overall drop of four percent on the previous year.
More worryingly, the education watchdog has classed four percent of all childminders, nurseries and crèches as 'inadequate'. Bad points were raised such as a lack of activities and poor staff training. The inspectors report that of the half a million children in childcare, 285,000 were receiving 'good' or 'outstanding' care. In 96% of childcare settings, the children are receiving 'satisfactory' or better care.
Children's Minister Beverley Hughes said: "Only 4% of childcare settings were found to be inadequate - a very small proportion. Where settings are judged to be inadequate, Ofsted will work with providers to help them to improve, but will also take the necessary action to ensure the best results for children."
