Is my baby in danger if I'm pregnant and diabetic?

Diabetes can be a serious condition, for you and for your baby. In fact, diabetes affects 1 in every 250 pregnancies in this country.

A study ( 'The confidential inquiry into maternal and child health ') has found that expectant mums with diabetes (types one and two) are five times more likely to have a stillborn baby, than a woman without the condition.

Babies who have mothers with diabetes are also at a higher risk of dying within four weeks of the birth, and more likely to have a major congenital deformity. However, these risks can be prevented by keeping your blood sugar levels under control before conception and during the pregnancy.

If you 're diabetic and thinking about having a baby, or are already pregnant, visit your GP as soon as possible. They will be able to advise you on how to protect your unborn baby, and can arrange regular checks so that your blood sugar levels can be carefully monitored and controlled. You should also avoid smoking or drinking alcohol during pregnancy.
