A mum has just given birth to the first sextuplets in England for almost 25 years. 31 year old Vicky Lamb gave birth 14 weeks prematurely to four girls and two boys. The smallest baby, born last Friday at 11.05pm, weighed under 1lb 5 ounces and the biggest was only 1lb and 15 ounces.
During the birth there were different teams of medical staff to look after the mother and each of her babies. All 6 babies are being looked after by a team of experts in the neonatal intensive care unit of Oxford’s John Radcliffe Hospital and the next few weeks will be ‘critical’ for them.
Live births of such a high number of babies are very rare and it is estimated that sextuplets occur in just one in every 4.5 million pregnancies.
Consultant neonatologist Dr Kenny McCormick, said: "The next few days and weeks will be critical. Babies that are born this early need a lot of specialist care..... they are receiving round-the- clock intensive care and specialist nursing at the moment and their condition is constantly monitored."
Although more and more premature babies are now surviving, the last sextuplets born in England were delivered in 1986, three years after the famous Waltons. Last year sextuplets, 4 boys and 2 girls, were born in Northern Ireland. They too spent a lot of time in intensive care after being born 14 weeks premature, weighing from 1lb 7ounces to 2lb 2ounces. The youngest baby, Kerrie Mae Conway, died in hospital, only 60 days old, with her parents at her bedside.
Last year in the U.S. Nadya Suleman gave birth to octuplets. She already had six children, all conceived through IVF!
