Most women do not find out the reason they had a miscarriage because they are generally only investigated if the mother has suffered three or more. 'Recurrent' miscarriages occur in around 1 in 100 women.
It is thought 'faulty' chromosomes are often the cause of early miscarriage. This is usually a one-off genetic problem in the baby which does not affect future pregnancies. Many women who suffer a miscarriage go on to have healthy pregnancies in the future.
Other Causes of Miscarriage Womb abnormalities
Infections such as rubella and listeria
Hormonal imbalance
Weak cervix
Smoking during pregnancy
The miscarriage rate increases in women over the age of 30 because their eggs are more likely to have chromosomal abnormalities. However, many women have healthy pregnancies throughout their thirties and forties.
Miscarriage is not caused by stress, exercise, lack of rest, lifting, constipation, sex, or eating spicy food.
